One of the most important ‘showcase’ events for agility in the UK takes place every December at Olympia, the London International Horse Show.

“Every year the qualifying events are held at agility shows across the country to gain a coveted invitation to compete in the Olympia finals. Competition is tough and you need to make it into the top 5 in a qualifying event to get a chance to compete in the quarter-finals at the Kennel Club International Agility Festival (KCIAF). The top 20 from the quarter-finals are then invited to the semi-finals at Olympia.

The arena is a lot bigger than our standard rings (just 32 x 32 m), so you either need to have incredible dog independence and distance handling skills or you need to be able to run – ideally both!

It’s important to me to try and be as prepared as possible for this event. I feel very lucky to have qualified and I don’t want to waste the opportunity. I also enjoy work out, so it gives me an extra incentive to work harder.

Speed Up Agility is helping me by providing structured workouts aimed specifically at agility handlers. My favorite is the footwork and sprinting as I know that these are the areas I need to improve the most.

In the meantime, I’m working on my dog’s fitness too! I like to make sure he gets two long walks in the woods every day and both walks include at least three big hills. He swims once a week and, in the six weeks prior to Olympia, he’ll also have treadmill hydrotherapy sessions. He also has regular massages to make sure he doesn’t have any tightness, alongside doing regular physio exercises to help improve his fitness and flexibility.

We can’t wait!”

We’re so happy that we’re able to support Becky as she prepares for Olympia. We want to wish this skillful team the best of luck in the competition!
